How to deal with every phases of interpersonal relationships?

Ever wondered how our interpersonal relationships or how do actually every phases of interpersonal relationships work out? Well, to answer that, one should get very clear about the concept of interpersonal relationship.

Interpersonal relationships involves social interactions, admiration, friendship or relationship between two persons. This may be due to societal norms, mutual agreement or a deep bond that two persons develop after their vibe matches.

phases of interpersonal relationships

There are various types of interpersonal relationships that exists between two persons:

  • Relationship between couples which exists due to love, affection, passion and commitment.
  • Parent-child relationship which mainly exists due to fear, blood-related and sentimental bonds.
  • Siblings’ relationship which exists mainly due to age compatibility, love, immense protectiveness and obviously emotional outcomes.
  • Work-relationship which involves between two persons working in the same organization. They are often referred to as colleagues or co-workers. The may or may not hold fondness of each other.
  • Friendship which is the sweetest out of every relationship happens out of choice and comfort level of two persons. It may involve persons of same gender or opposite gender.
  • Utopian/platonic relationship which involves two persons deeply connected to each without the feeling of physical intimacy or sex. Relationship like these may end in romanticism with both persons developing love and affection for each other without the desire for physical intimacy.

Phases of interpersonal relationships

Inter-personal relationships are very dynamic in nature. It develops due to many factors existing between two persons and keeps evolving or deteriorating according to their nature. The phases involve:

  • Association which mainly start due to initial impressions, frequent meetings and matching of mentalities and vibes.
  • Development in which both persons start to confide and develop a feeling of trust for the opposite person. In this stage their future prospective, attitude towards a particular happening or person appears to be same.
  • Maintenance in which the feeling of continuing the relationship exists between two persons with the support of mutual understanding, trust and belief.
  • Worsening and calling it off in which feelings tend to fade and loosing of interest happens. Monotonous feelings, difference of opinions and mentalities often makes any relation suffer and ultimately it dies.

There are several other factors also that people involving in any kind of interpersonal relationships tend to break down or fall apart. Whenever any particular relation turns old, it naturally tends to get monotonous which induces the relationship to turn derogatory.

Things turn sour and violence comes to the picture with repeated conflicts, disagreements and the absence of fondness for each other.

Understand the importance of everything

Every phase of inter-personal relationship teaches something or the other to any individual involved. As human beings we often crave for love, care and the feeling of being understood. And here I would like to quote the famous Rabbi Julius Gordan,” Love is not blind”.

Obviously, it should never be also. Love should provide you confidence, the feeling of someone holding your back whenever you fall, without taking a control of anyone’s life.

There always remains a want of social acceptance in some of the interpersonal relationships mainly marriage or parent-child relationship. It remains justified to give society importance, but it should never be such a barrier that it destroys your relation.

People tend to remain silent and continue to tolerate abusive relationships, or abusive parenthood just for the sake of social respect and recognition. Your needs, cravings should always be such that it completes you, not that it destroys you.

Some types of interpersonal relationships help a person to bring out their natural true self. It mainly happens in friendships where the feeling of being judged remains quite less as compared to other relations.

A person’s self-esteem, self-confidence, self-value always boosts when one possesses such persons in their life. Their emotions, their smiles, their tears are always felt and empathized. As a result of which, their behavior, personality changes and they evolve as a better person.

Communication is the key

There never exist any misunderstanding which cannot be solved. There should be a will to solve it and a choice to prioritize the relation more than the misunderstanding.

To every misunderstanding existing in any kind of relation, communication is the key to solve it. You have to settle your differences and arrive at a point of mutual understanding through communication.

A relationship gradually loses its place and becomes dull if proper communication is not there. Communication helps to restore the charm and efficiency of every relation between two persons involved.

While communicating one needs to take care of his vocal tone, the way in which he/she is trying to convey a message. The words you use during solving your disagreement or misunderstanding matters a lot.

Effective communication always holds the basic factor of any long-lasting and a healthy relationship.

Shape your relation in an unbreakable way

Every inter-personal relationship shapes up on its own way and in its own space. Interpersonal relationships go a long way in changing people’s mentality, perception and an individual’s outlook towards everything.

An individual often takes notice of the treatment, gestures, facial expressions of his opposite person towards him/her. The other person’s thoughts, beliefs, attitude towards him/her decides the fate and longevity of the relation.

Every person generally comprises of the assistive attitude in which the actions and behavior are always in support and in favor of the other person, and the resistive attitude in which the actions and gestures are always against the other person which in turn makes the person weak and frustrating.

Consider it a responsibility, not a burden

Not every relationship ends on a good note and its completely okay to let off go a relation rather than continuing it with a bitter approach every day. Every relation can come to an end, not just romantic relation.

But the attitude towards how you have maintained it, matters a lot. A person with whom you are involved in an interpersonal relationship should always be your responsibility not your burden be it your friends, your siblings or your partner. The feeling of carrying a burden is tiresome and it cannot continue for a very long period of time.

Interpersonal relationships surely do give us a feeling of confidence by improving our personality and touching every hook in our mind and heart.

I quite firmly believe, and I say this many a times that “Managing is very difficult as compared to quitting”.

My suggestion to my readers will always be that no matter in whatever kind of interpersonal relationship you’re in, try to value it and if at all it breaks in due course of time, then make sure you can take away something from that particular relation be it some lessons, guidance or love.

To sum up, I would like to end it with a thought from the famous Bob Marley,

“The greatness of a man is not how much wealth he acquires, but his integrity and ability to affect those around him positively.”
